North Curry Parish Council Parish Council Vacancy: As a result of Ian Fugett ceasing to be a member, a vacancy exists on the Parish Council. The Council has the powers to co-opt to fill such a vacancy. Anyone wishing to be considered is asked to forward their name, together with brief details of their reasons for applying, to the Parish Office before 1st September 2009. The Parish Clerk, or any of your current members, would be happy to discuss with you any aspect of becoming a Councillor. Oxen Lane: The High Court hearing relating to the statutory review of the Planning Inspectorate’s decision of 8th June 2008 on the original planning appeal/inquiry of Holland and others took place on 19th June and the Court ruled that the Inspector was correct to refuse planning permission. The High Court hearing to vary the Injunction prior to clearing the site has been scheduled for 22nd July. A Message from David Fothergill County Councillor, North Curry Division: “Let me start by thanking everyone who voted for me in the recent County Council elections. My duty now is to represent everyone in the North Curry Division whatever your political persuasion and I will do my absolute utmost to fulfil this responsibility. One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a County Councillor is that each of us is given a small amount of community funds to spend in our Division on projects, which may need help to get them off the ground. My own Division covers ten Parishes and I am keen that all have a fair call on the monies; grants are therefore more likely to be hundreds rather than thousands! So if you are a local organisation, providing a local service or facility to local people I may be able to help get your project off the ground. Please write to me at Lantern House, Stoke St Mary, Taunton TA3 5BX or email djafothergill@somerset.gov.uk, giving details of your request. It is a true privilege to serve as County Councillor for the North Curry Division and I look forward to working with you to resolve issues over the coming years.” DeafPLUS: This mobile advisory service will be visiting Queen Square again on Thursday 27th August between 1:30 and 3:30 pm. Planning Committee Please note that with effect from 26th August Committee meetings will commence at 7:30pm, not 8:00pm as previously. Parish Council diary for August

Lunch Club The Lunch Club has been successfully running for over 20 years; begun by a team of volunteers. For many years I had Pat Curtis along side me, then in later years Helen Smith, both being great to work with and doing a fantastic job. Helen is now stepping down and I need someone to step into her shoes beside me. The commitment is a few hours over the Lunchtime every other Tuesday (not during August) and some organisation etc. ongoing. We have a fantastic group cooking, serving, washing up, etc and over 20 senior members who really enjoy themselves and we really want to continue but we do need two of us at the helm. If you feel you would like to come on board, please ring either me, Tina Stodgell, on 480629 or Helen on 490984

There will be no meeting in August but a few members hope to go to Webbington Hotel on 20th August to hear Andrew Lound’s talk “Lunatick Astronomy” Next meeting Wed 2nd September – 2:15pm “In the Steps of Shackleton” by John Elder. Competition - a jar of preserves. Our ‘Day Out’ this year was to Lyme Regis where it was sunny with a gentle breeze, unlike North Curry, which was so hot and humid! We spent the time lunching, shopping, strolling or sitting. The coach then took us to the nearby Donkey Sanctuary, which has rescued animals from all over the world. After a cream tea, we made our way back home.
Hello everyone This month I would like to raise the issue of anti-social behaviour. With the warmer weather and school summer holidays this is traditionally the time of year we receive an increase in reports of nuisance behaviour. Everyone has the right to enjoy peace and tranquillity in their own home and should not suffer as a result of anti-social behaviour by others. Anti social behaviour can take many forms such as excessive noise, intimidation, harassment, vandalism, drunkenness, drug abuse, etc. The Police work closely with housing providers and other organisations to address anti-social behaviour so it is important that if you are subject to such behaviour you report it to either the police or, if you are a tenant of a housing association, you should consider also reporting to your Nuisance Prevention Officer. Can I also take this opportunity to remind you about PACT meetings where you can raise issues in your community that directly affect your quality of life. It is important that all groups within our community feel they have a voice so I would urge you to participate in the next PACT meeting if you want to make a difference to policing in your area. For information on the next PACT meeting in your area visit www.avonandsomerset.police.uk or phone me on the number below. Finally, Inspector Roger Tolley is leaving the role of Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for the Taunton and Wellington areas on 1st September 2009 to undertake a similar role at Burnham on Sea Police Station. His replacement at Taunton will be Inspector Sam Williams, who is currently performing the Neighbourhood Inspector role at Burnham on Sea. Inspector Williams will bring with him a considerable enthusiasm and commitment to community policing. Usual numbers 0845 456 7000 for all requests for assistance and you can also reach me on Voicemail 01823 363287 and 70106 at the prompt. Regards until next month. PCSO 8784 Lynsey Gamblin |
NORTH CURRY COMMUNITY COFFEE SHOP Seeing Stars!
Quality is what you get at the Coffee Shop – that’s not news is it, we’ve said it before… but to be boringly predictable, we’ll say it again. Why? Well, it’s those five stars which the Environmental Health people have judged us worthy of again. 5,4,3,2,1, or zero, can apply; to get the full five star rating, second time round now, is really a “top of the class” assessment and a credit to the volunteers who give their best to keep you well catered for. We continue to cater for your cultural health too. August sees work from the well-known painter Kate Lynch – featuring Somerset farming and craft themes: sheep, wool, apples, cider, peat and willow. So keep coming to the Coffee Shop for that complete gastronomic and cultural experience. And, by the way, do sign up to volunteer too – phone 490795 or 490623. You’ll be the better for it.
There will be no meeting in August but we look forward to welcoming members and friends on 16th September when we will be entertained by the North Curry Bellringers.
Royal British Legion The coffee morning held on Saturday 11th July was very successful indeed. The rain held off and so it was well attended and we made a profit of £259. So its thanks to all those who donated gifts, raffle prizes and their time and effort to make it a success. There is no meeting in August so the next meeting of the branch will be on 14th September at the Bird in Hand starting at 7:30pm.
The Taunton Rural Safer, Stronger Neighbourhoods team would like to take this opportunity to promote the following Watch Schemes in your area; Farm Watch Rural Watch Horse Watch The aim of these ‘Watches’ is to give owners practical advice on how to improve your security. No device or equipment can be guaranteed to keep a determined thief out or stop them taking an item away but by taking appropriate steps you can make it much more difficult. We will assist in making your property more identifiable, therefore making it less disposable to the thief and more likely that it can be returned to you if you are unfortunate to have it stolen. For this purpose we offer a marking service. We record your valuable items of equipment, property and or livestock using digital photography. The information is recorded on an affiliated data base and a copy given to you for your own records.
Stolen items can then be traced via the data base to help the Police in
identifying your property. For further information or supporting literature,
please contact your lead officer on Tel: 07717868209.
North Curry Art Club North Curry Art Club is a long established and thriving art group, which caters for all abilities. We run a programme of events each term, which can cover anything from skills and techniques in painting and drawing or other related areas to the study of artists and their work or art from different countries. Alongside this, there is the opportunity for members to work on their own projects, all with individual help and guidance. We are a very sociable and friendly group and if you think you may like to join us, please call Claire Anderson on 01460 63083 for further information. |
