Articles of not more than 150 words, regarding village events of a voluntary or charitable nature, are accepted in good faith, by the 12th of the preceding month for inclusion via the Pink Posting Box in North Curry Post Office, or to Newsletter@northcurry.com or to the Editor Barbara Drakeford, Chorlton, Lillesdon, North Curry (Tel 490811)

North Curry Parish Council

White Street Development:  This project has suffered a setback due to the Football Foundation deciding not to offer funding despite earlier assurances that our circumstances were eligible.  The Council is pushing ahead with a scaled down range of amenities and is seeking alternative sources of funding.

White Street Woodland: This area of around ⅔ acre will be planted during this winter.  Help is invited for the design and planting work.  Original ideas welcome.  Please ring Phil Stone 01823 491689 or Tim Machen 01823 490881.

New Bridge: The Parish Council’s negotiations with the Environment Agency have resulted in the proposed closure of New Bridge being limited initially to 3 months.  There will be additional short-term closures after that date and the EA have agreed to give at least one week’s notice of these and to provide effective signage to avoid drivers going as far as the bridge to find it is closed.

Newport Road closure: The Council has been advised that Newport Road will be closed from Oxen Lane to the A378 for one week from 1st September.

Mailing List: At the time of writing, we have had four responses to our request in July for parishioners to participate in the proposed e-mailing list.  This was to be used to circulate reminders and urgent information on planning and other issues when the conventional communication channel of this Newsletter is not sufficiently timely.  The list would be strictly confidential to the Council and would not be published.  If you would like your address to be placed on the list, please send an e-mail with MAILING LIST as the Subject quoting your name together with your e-mail and postal addresses to parishcouncil@northcurry.com.  We need your postal address to validate that you are a parishioner.  If we do not receive a lot more responses, we will abandon the idea.

Police Surgery: This will take place in the Parish Office on Tuesday 2nd September from 10:00 – 11:00 am

DeafPLUS: This mobile advisory service will be visiting Queen Square again on Thursday 25th September between 1:30 and 3:15 pm.

North Curry Coffee Shop

North Curry’s own

As autumn approaches, the Coffee Shop takes on a local flavour in the form of our own artists Kate Mears and Nancy Wells.

Kate trained as an illustrator then worked in London illustrating mainly children’s books. She has lived in North Curry for the last 14 years, now painting watercolours of interiors, still life, gardens and buildings, including views of North Curry, many reproduced as cards and postcards.

As for Nancy, there will be new work – alongside her traditional range of willow-ware and orchard-ware.  Premiered in North Curry – so make sure you come for a viewing!  From 2nd September through to 12th October.

And don’t forget – if you read our appeal for more volunteers last month and thought of contacting us but haven’t got round to it – it’s never too late.  Phone 490795 or 490623 to find out more.  It’s fun too!

The Society meets again on Wednesday 17th September at 8:00pm in the Village Hall when Julian Comrie will present A Mediterranean Spring.

Julian needs no introduction as a speaker and we look forward to another brilliant evening. The topics will include classical sites, spring flowers, and a total eclipse of the sun.

Members and non-members are all welcome. Come and dream a while!

Extra copies of the Pink Sheet are available in North Curry Post Office in the first week of the month.

The next meeting of the branch will be on 8th September at the Bird in Hand starting at 7:30pm. Attendance of a few more members would be appreciated.

MSA COFFEE MORNING

This year I have decided not to have a Cancer Research Coffee Morning but instead bring awareness of the condition called MSA, which is what I have been diagnosed with.

I’m not asking for sympathy, but trying to help people understand how Multiple Systems Atrophy affects me.  Any money raised will go to the Sarah Matheson Trust, which is a support organisation.

The Coffee Morning will be held at ‘Penny Barton’, Stoke Road, on Saturday 4th October, from 10 am to noon, and I hope to see you there.

Let’s hope we have a rain-free North Curry!  All the usual things will be on sale.

The Save It group has outgrown its original objective – broadly, that of climate change awareness-raising, through a series of talks, films and discussions.  That task continues, but a new focus has emerged, via the concept and model of Transition Communities.  The Transition model is gaining support with remarkable speed and this is hardly surprising; more and more people are seeing the potential abyss which climate change and peak oil represents, and long for a sound course of action.

The Save It group has decided to embark on a Transition initiative.  This will involve a number of action groups, in key areas such as education, housing, food & agriculture, woodland, energy generation and transport.  These groups will be largely autonomous and open to anyone with an interest in these areas of activity.

You are invited to a meeting to hear about the proposals in more detail, to harness support for the various action groups, and to open up the Steering Group to new members.  The only condition for membership of the Steering Group is that its members must also be members of one of the action groups.

The meeting will be 8pm on 18th September at the Pavilion, Greenway, North Curry.

Do you know how to contact the Police?

Most people know the 999 emergency number. This should only be used where there is a threat to life, likelihood or fear of injury or if an offence is being committed and the offender is still at the scene. The Avon and Somerset call handling centre deal with on average 800 emergency calls every day and answer about 90% of the calls within 10 seconds.

We want to encourage the public to contact local officers to discuss any non-emergency community issues or concerns. Our “one number” service (0845 456 7000) attracts on average 2,700 calls every day and so far this year we have answered 83% of these calls within 40 seconds.

The public can contact the police using our e-mail service. There are templates on the Avon and Somerset Police website www.avonandsomerset.police.uk

Police station enquiry offices still provide an important link to the community. The opening hours of your local police station are available on the website

The Safer Stronger Neighbourhood Teams across the District strive to deliver a quality service, which meets local needs. We need to hear from you and we have made real progress in making it easier for you to contact us.

If you wish to contact me you can reach me on Voicemail 01823 363287 and 70106 at the prompt.

Regards until next month.

Ballet bugs classes now at North Curry Village Hall

These classes are starting in September taught by Tamsin an experienced and qualified dance teacher who specialises in the baby/ preschool curriculum

The classes have been split into three age groups: Babies 9 – 18 months, Spinners;18mths – 2½ years, Springers 2½ - 3½ years to be held in North Curry Village hall on Wednesday mornings.

Our classes are for boys and girls (and sometimes mums and dads as well!)

Ballet bugs enhances children’s movement ability and physical fitness, aids children’s  physical and spatial awareness, stimulates children’s listening skills, encourages  children to move expressively, builds children’s confidence, self esteem and encourages children to become co-operative and sociable.

This is all achieved through using movement, music, instruments, story telling, imagery and props.  With the emphasis on having lots of fun!!

Classes run for 40mins each and are based on the ‘Dance to your own tune’ pre-school dance curriculum devised by the Royal Academy of Dance.

For more information about these exciting classes please contact Joanna Elliott on 07966 429592
